Currently, Dr. Joel Huegel West is the leader of the Biomechatronics Lab and a tenured professor and researcher in mechanical engineering at the Tecnológico de Monterrey - Guadalajara Campus in Mexico. Dr. Huegel completed his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering in 2009 from Rice University in Houston. He has more than 30 refereed publications in international conferences and journals, and 2 patents granted in Mexico. His areas of interest are biomechatronics and haptic interfaces. Originally from Mexico City, Huegel has lived in Mexico, the United States, Nepal and China. He received the “Inspiring Professor 2015” award, the highest distinction granted by the Tec de Monterrey to its faculty for his outstanding work as a teacher, researcher, and mentor. More than 30 of the graduates who were under his tutelage have continued their postgraduate studies abroad. Also in 2016 he received the appointment of Mexican National Investigator S.N.I. Level 1 of the National Council of Science and Technology (CONACyT) and in 2018 he received the Jalisco Scientific Category Award.
